You have arrived at the webpage for the historical fiction novel, "An Uncomfortable Silence", written by Andrew C. Swick. Here is a summary of the story;
Bill Marten, a 21 year old Senior at Northwestern University, awakens Christmas morning in 1942, to unexpected and life changing news. His only sibling has been killed, while serving aboard the USS Atlanta. To avenge his older brother’s death, Bill drops out of school three months before graduation and enlists in the navy. Leaving behind a bright future and his beautiful new love Ruth, the next two and a half years take him from boot-camp and Motor Torpedo Boat School halfway around the globe, to the extraordinary tropical islands and waters of the southwest Pacific. Serving as Quartermaster aboard a high-speed PT-Boat in Squadron 27, Bill and his shipmates hunt the hidden enemy by night. Trying in vain to relieve his pain and anger, the mounting kills from each completed mission bring no satisfaction, only “An Uncomfortable Silence”. Gradually, the obvious adversary of flesh and bones is supplanted by an intensifying inner conflict that haunts his days. Ultimately Bill determines that the only hope he has for “life after the war” demands that he face his real demons in a final battle for his soul.
